One of the largest and most popular branches of engineering, civil engineering focuses on the construction as well as maintenance of structures like dams, canals, roads and buildings. It encompasses important concepts that are related to the other fields of science including water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, surveying, transportation engineering, construction engineering, urban engineering and materials engineering. This field opens numerous career opportunities to individuals who have excellent knowledge on various subjects such as hydrology, geology, geography and materials science. Learn more about this discipline by knowing the different civil engineering jobs.

The Different Types of Civil Engineering Jobs

Aside from becoming self-employed civil engineers, professionals who pursue a career related to civil engineering can attain impressive positions in the construction sector. They can work as quantity surveyors, concreting engineers, precast engineers and structural steel designers. In addition, they are qualified to work as structural supervisors, field engineers, project managers as well as materials preservation supervisors.

A Career Outlook for Civil Engineers

Entry-level civil engineers work minimally in construction sites. In order to show their knowledge on civil engineering, they are usually in-charge of monitoring improvements in a specific project. After several years of working as junior engineers, they have the chance to be promoted as senior design engineers. When they are promoted, they will lead a team of junior engineers. In addition, they are responsible for developing and evaluating complex design projects.

The average working hours of civil engineers is 40 to 45 a week. In terms of compensation, their annual salary ranges from $60,000 to $100,000, depending on the type of employment. For example, those who work in the private sector have a median annual income of $60,000 to $80,000. On the other hand, those who are hired by governmental agencies earn $65,000 to $100,000 a year.

Tips on Getting a Civil Engineering Job

To become a civil engineer, one should complete a bachelor’s degree in engineering. It is important to have sufficient understanding on mathematics, design as well as project management. After completing a degree, it is necessary that they pass a national, provincial or state licensure examination.

Civil engineers who want to establish an impressive career should find all the available opportunities offered to them by companies. To look for the available job openings, they need to check the job postings on local and international newspapers. Additionally, they can check the Internet for recent economic opportunities offered to professionals who have ample understanding on civil engineering.

More Points on Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is an interesting field of engineering that focuses on the development as well as maintenance of natural and manmade structures like highways, bridges and buildings. It offers great economic opportunities to people who want to excel in designing and evaluating structures. In order to practice their profession, civil engineers should have ample understanding on other related fields like thermodynamics, hydrology and structural design. Additionally, it is important to satisfy the educational and professional requirements set by companies. Moreover, they should possess outstanding analytical and management skills.

Civil engineering is the second oldest type of engineering, preceded only by military engineering. The term civil engineering originated as a way of distinguishing between military engineering and anything that was non-military engineering.

Civil engineering is simply the sub-section of engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the natural and physical environment inclusive of water works, dams, sewers canals, transmission towers, traffic control, irrigation systems, skyscrapers, airport runways, industrial plants, power plants and many more. In fact it is accurate to say that the worldwide infrastructure is the work of civil engineering; as such civil engineering jobs can be found globally in both the public and private sectors and at every level.

Civil engineering is usually sub-divided into several smaller sections inclusive of transportation engineering, construction engineering, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering, irrigation engineering, land development, environmental engineering, coastal and ocean engineering and geotechnical engineering; so a practicing civil engineer can choose which of these areas he/she would like to specialize in and branch off accordingly.

There is not a country, state, city or town in the world that does not require the work of a civil engineer; a quick search online will show you that there are dozens of listed vacancies around the world for people who are qualified to work in all of the sub-divisions of civil engineering.

If you would like to practice civil engineering either where you live or abroad, you will first be required to complete a 4 year degree; however obtaining a civil engineering degree takes quite a bit of work and dedication as it requires a lot of mathematics and physical sciences. Some places will also require you to have a license before you can brand yourself as a civil engineer.

Due to the nature of civil engineering, a single job may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few years; the shorter jobs will probably appeal to an engineer who would like to move from one project to another every few months and try out the various sub-categories of civil engineering to determine which one he/she prefers, and he/she can also gain experience in each one. However, engineers looking for something more stable and who have already chosen their area of specialization may be more likely to choose something that is more stable and long-term.

There are many opportunities available to a person who would like to practice civil engineering; finding one may mean that you will have to spend some time in another country, or you may even have to relocate completely but as long as you are willing the opportunities are there.

If you would like to work as a civil engineer in another country you will need to check out all the requirements for doing so; as said before, in some places a degree while suffice while others will require that you obtain a license before you can practice. You will also need to obtain all the necessary paperwork for the country you are going to.
